Sorry folks, GTA 6 won’t be at the Summer Games Fest, host Geoff Keighley has confirmed.
After Keighley posted a post about GTA 6’s hopes picture (opens in new tab) Twitter showcased some of the most popular search terms around “#SummerGameFest” on some of the social media platforms. Besides the simple “#SummerGameFest”, the other two most popular terms are “#SummerGameFest leak” and “#SummerGameFest gta”.
Twitter users may use the word “leak” to search for the numerous leaks that have surfaced before the show, including images and videos of unconfirmed Street Fighter 6 characters and rumors that Kojima is working on a new horror game called excess. But the “gta” tag seems to indicate that Grand Theft Auto fans are eager for more details about the highly anticipated crime sequel.
Unfortunately for ardent fans, Geoff Keighley confirmed in his tweet that the GTA 6 trailer won’t be revealed at the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 9.
Most popular Twitter search term…sorry, we didn’t reveal the GTA6 trailer either. I know it was heartbreaking tonight. #SummerGameFest pic.twitter.com/LA5LVsFfI1June 9, 2022
The news that Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t be at the Summer Game Festival showcase isn’t a surprise. While fans are eager for more details after the next Grand Theft Auto is officially announced in early February of this year, it’s worth tempering our expectations for when we’ll find out more — we’ll probably have to wait a while.
Let’s get the bad news out of the way for now: we’ll likely not get to GTA 6 until sometime between 2024 and 2025. Rockstar Games may not have confirmed a release date or window, but as reported in May 2020, parent company Take-Two Interactive’s financial earnings report (opens in new tab) Figures from that year show the company expects to spend $89 million on marketing between April 2023 and March 2024 — a huge peak.As the report points out, this is more than half of the expected marketing budget for any other fiscal year over the next ten years, indicating that we Can We released GTA 6 during that period.
When Take-Two Interactive detailed its plans to acquire mobile gaming company Zynga earlier this year, it shared a note saying “the combined company is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14% over three years… Fiscal Years 2021-2024”. Analysts believe that this may indicate that Rockstar is preparing to release a major IP.
But, as we know, the only constant is change, and a lot could happen between now and 2024. The massive game delays we’ve seen over the past year are proof of that.
Here’s why we’re more inclined to believe leaker Tom Henderson’s predictions (opens in new tab) 2024/2025 release window (already confirm (opens in new tab) by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg). However, even so, we may see delays in the future. Essentially, we’re not touching GTA 6 for a while.
So, based on the projected release window, when can we find out more details? Well, if the 2024 release window is around the corner, then we expect Rockstar Games to start sharing information next year, but we don’t expect other announcements like the Summer Game Fest to be interspersed with disclosures as big as GTA 6. No, while Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 announcement was more of a whimper than a bang, we think the developers will host their own showcase or announcement when Grand Theft Auto 6 is ready.
Based on previous announcements, we thought the developers might simply tease a reveal and then release an internet-breaking trailer.
Either way, don’t expect GTA 6 to be announced anytime soon, and certainly don’t expect to see it at the Summer Games Festival.
